MANUFACTURING COMPLEX COMPONENTS MORE EASILY AND QUICKLY

Data consistency offered by Siemens NX also supports users with LMD technology

toolcraft has been manufacturing 3D-printed components using powder bed technology since 2011. It invested in a laser metal deposition (LMD) machine in 2019. The data consistency offered by Siemens NX software also supports toolcraft with its LMD activities.

The starting point:
MANUFACTURE OF COMPLEX COMPONENTS

Ever since being founded, toolcraft has been bold enough to develop components with highly complex geometries. This is also the case in the area of laser deposition welding. The company uses powder nozzles to make repairs to defective components, apply coatings and wear protection, and perform hybrid construction methods. It also uses its nozzle technology and machinery to perform the extreme high-speed laser material deposition process (EHLA) developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT.

The Challenge:
CUSTOMISABLE SOFTWARE SOLUTION

toolcraft chose to use Siemens NX to program its LMD machine. When deploying this software solution, it also had to develop a suitable post-process for its LMD machine and integrate the line scanner.

The result:
IMPROVEMENTS ALONG THE PRODUCTION LINE

A project team from Siemens and toolcraft worked closely together to develop the post-process and were able to make continuous improvements to the machine's operability by creating several test versions. The end result was simple path planning for the LMD machine and data consistency within CAD and CAM. The software also improved offline programming.
